Summary
As an athlete in his sophomore year of college, Billy Hansen found himself miserable. Two years later, as a senior, he enjoyed the most satisfying basketball season of his life. The path from depression and anxiety to joy and peak performance was somewhat unconventional. A therapist taught him to meditate, enabling him to face his problems instead of shrinking from them. By modifying his habits regarding drugs, partying and his phone, and reading meaningful books, he developed mature attitudes toward both his sport and his life. His experiences are honestly narrated and his conclusions are convincingly drawn. Since graduating, Hansen has continued studying and practicing meditation, and now teaches other athletes how to integrate mental training into their sports. He presently teaches a course at Regis University called Mindfulness for Athletes, and is the meditation coach for the Regis men's basketball and baseball teams. He's worked with athletes at all levels, from high school to the NBA. This book, then, is about playing sports, overcoming anxiety, the practice of meditation, growing up, and discovering how to live well
