Summary
Shay Potter's first novel is a thoughtful exploration of acceptance, love, and camaraderie set in contemporary neighborhoods of Los Angeles and Tucson. In the beginning, there was a national debate. "Shy kept their head down at work. They didn't ask, and they certainly didn't tell. They carried an expressionless face and easy temperament most days despite slowly simmering inside." It is the fall of 2010. The repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell is capturing the nation's attention. Life just got more complicated for Shy Cole, a non-binary military officer struggling with their identity and budding attraction to their supervisor. Their mother, Evelyn Cole, and the world around them expect them to live conservatively, despite their own happiness. It was possible for Shy to live such a life until the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy threatened to reveal their identity and put an end to their military career. Shy questions: after all that is happening, did they make the right choice for themselves? Evelyn Cole is surprised at how close the DADT policy impacts her in the months ahead. Once Evelyn discovers the truth about Shy, she must re-examine her perception of the past and present. As a result, she questions everything, including her faith and her role as a mother. The decision Shy and Evelyn face will either reunite them or separate them. With beautifully written, lyrical prose, Two Roads Back Together unfolds the tale about a journey of self-discovery. The book explores family relationships, challenges deeply ingrained fears, and shows that we can rise above the limitations we place on ourselves and others
