Humans have damaged and neglected the environment for too long and now the world has changed. The seas have warmed and risen, flooding cities, swallowing the land. People have been washed away from their homes. Trin is part of a team of a science team that defy the dangers of the ferocious seas at the new coastline to investigate the damage and find ways to help heal the oceans. When two strangers claiming to be researchers arrive on the high tide, Trin's mysterious second-sight lets her briefly glimpse through their psychic illusions and for a moment see them for the strange creatures that they really are.
